7 of the best hybrid hospitality brands in Spain

Hybrids are dynamic, multifunctional spaces where people can stay, work, eat and drink, and socialise all under one roof. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many hospitality brands have pivoted to a hybrid model in order to maximise revenue and cater to changing guest needs.

In this series, we’re travelling around the world to highlight the brands that are leading the way in this exciting space. This month, it’s Spain’s turn to take the spotlight!

From the streets of Madrid to the shores of Majorca, here are seven of the best hybrid hospitality brands in España:

1. Sun and Co.

Voted best coliving community of the year, Sun and Co. are bringing coliving, coworking and community together, all under one roof in Javea, Costa Blanca. They focus on offering remote workers, digital nomads and location-independent professionals a place to be productive, as well as giving them the opportunity to meet new people and explore all that the Mediterranean coast has to offer.

Amenities include spacious common areas such as their chillout patio and communal kitchen and a 24/7 coworking workspace that is used by guests, locals and businesses alike. Sun and Co. also have a dedicated Skype Room that guests can access for private calls, webinars or meetings. Weekly social activities are also held onsite.

Rooms are split between shared and private options, from bunk-style beds to doubles with their own ensuite. Like most coliving spaces, Sun and Co. have rates for both short-term and extended bookings, with discounts for those who are planning on staying for longer.

2. Generator Madrid and Barcelona

Generator currently has 14 locations across Europe and the US. Each site combines the social culture of a hostel with the features expected of a high-end hotel – design-centric interiors, vibrant communal spaces and quality F&B which offers guests the ultimate luxury on a budget.

With two urban sites in Barcelona and Madrid, these design-led hotels give guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in a dynamic social culture and connect with each other as well as with their surroundings.

As well as stylish and affordable accommodation, both of Generator’s Spanish sites offer both guests and locals a variety of social spaces, opportunities to relax, meet others and work. There is also a rooftop bar, a taco bar, an indoor terrace and many more chill-out areas.

3. The Student Hotel

Currently operating in 15 European cities – including Barcelona – The Student Hotel is a pioneer in the hybrid hospitality space. The Student Hotel’s Barcelona site is located right in the heart of the city’s creative Poble Sec neighbourhood, which is renowned for its tapas bars and lively nightlife.

In the hotel itself, guests have access to a shared kitchen, study room, games area, gym and pool. Rooms are equipped with mod-cons like flat-screen TVs, air-con and a desk for studying. Like all Student Hotels, there are extended stay options so guests can check-in for one night or up to one year.

The Covid-19 pandemic hit Spain’s hospitality industry hard, but The Student Hotel actually bucked this trend thanks to its flexible hybrid model. They were able to reallocate rooms in sync with changing consumer demand and achieve strong occupancy despite travel restrictions!

Thanks to a recent €300 million investment, The Student Hotel has seven new hotels in the pipeline, so we expect to see this award-winning hybrid hospitality concept opening up in more cities very soon!

4. Palma Coliving

Palma Coliving is a hybrid hospitality brand with a focus on conscious coliving and building a  community of coworkers across their three locations in Majorca, Tenerife and Valencia.

In their own words, Palma are ‘dedicated to digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers,’ with their community fostering environmental sustainability, personal wellbeing, and authentic connections. They offer guests the chance to meet like-minded people, escape their routine and boost productivity in their handpicked villa-style properties.

With each of their locations just a short distance from the sea, Palma gives guests fully furnished accommodation for all-inclusive rates. All of their coliving villas have amenities that are centred around coworking, including individual hot desk spaces, fibre-optic WiFi and meeting rooms. The villas also have chillout areas, pool tables and fitness spaces for out-of-office hours which guests can use to relax, unwind and socialise with their fellow digital nomads.

Weekly community events are also hosted to bring the community together – Palma team up with local partners to offer everything from food tasting and networking to sporting events, and much more.

With plans to open two new sites in Barcelona and Málaga, Palma Coliving is definitely a brand to watch!

5. Nine Coliving

Nine Coliving is a coliving and coworking community located in Tenerife. With views overlooking the sea and the volcano El Teide, Nine Coliving is based inside an old Canarian house that has been transformed into a place where digital nomads can live, work and meet.

Guests have 24/7 access to a fully-equipped workspace which includes both classic and standing desks, private booths, a conference room and – of course – superfast broadband.

Outside of the coworking space, Nine’s house has a whole host of communal spaces where guests can socialise and relax, including a rooftop terrace, an event room and a garden. Regular community events and activities are hosted for guests to partake in, such as daily morning yoga, guided hikes and family dinner nights.

Guests can stay in a shared 3-bed dorm or a private room – there are single and double options that can be rented by 1-2 people. All of their rooms have a shared bathroom, and they have an additional ensuite double room with a private bathroom. Nine offer discounted weekly and monthly rates for those who are looking to stay for extended periods of time.

6. La Cocotera

La Cocotera Boutique Hostel & Coworking is a 6 room inn situated in the town of Tarifa in southwest Andalusia. The brand is all about offering both a home and an office for digital nomads, freelancers, startups and remote workers. La Cocotera’s goal is to bring value to the Tarifa paradise and satisfy the needs of the nomad workers who are looking for a healthy place to live, work and have fun.

In the coliving space itself, there are a variety of different room options available, from shared bunk beds to private studios with kitchenettes. Guests have access to a fully-equipped shared kitchen, lounge, rooftop terrace, and a communal workspace. Regular events and activities are held by the hostel, including group BBQs and music nights. They can also access the brand’s own app – Cocoquía – which features a personalised guide of Tarifa.

La Cocotera’s coworking space is open to both guests and locals, who can rent a workstation on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis for full flexibility. Coworkers get access to free hot drinks, personal lockers and full use of the hostel’s shared kitchen and rooftop.

7. The Hat Madrid

The Hat combines the vibe of a hostel with the services of a hotel to offer guests an authentic experience of Madrid. Just a 2-minute walk from Plaza Mayor, this hostel is described as “a place for smart travellers to go socialise and share with others”. Community is at the heart of The Hat, with multiple spaces dedicated to bringing guests together, including the main lobby and the famous rooftop bar.

There are plenty of choices when it comes to rooms, with The Hat providing private, shared and female-only options for both individuals and groups. This eco-hostel has a strong commitment to sustainability – something which is becoming increasingly important to today’s guests. It is the first hostel in Madrid that uses biomass as a source of energy and it has cut down on paper and waste consumption.

In the midst of the pandemic, The Hat adapted to the struggles that Spain’s tourism industry was facing by pivoting into a coliving space. Since then, it has continued to offer flexible longer stays for locals and holidaymakers alike.
